US allows Iranian delegation to attend UN assembly

The US has granted an Iranian delegation permission to participate in the upcoming UN General Assembly, according to a state department spokesman. This decision was made despite ongoing hostilities that have persisted for seven months. The delegation, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, will be able to attend the High Level Week of the General Assembly, as required by their obligations as a host country.

However, the delegation will be smaller than last year's, and they will face certain restrictions during their visit. These restrictions include limitations on travel and the purchase of luxury goods and other products.

The conflict between the US and Iran escalated in late February, leading to retaliatory actions and a broader regional war. The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil transit, has been under blockade by Iran, contributing to the surge in oil prices. Recent weeks have seen a renewed intensity in the hostilities, further complicating the situation.

In a separate development, the US has denied entry visas to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for the UN General Assembly for the second consecutive year. This decision, made by the administration of former President Donald Trump, prevents Abbas from addressing the global leaders in person. The US administration cited Abbas' failure to reform and ongoing activities that undermine peace prospects as the reasons for the denial.

The same criteria were applied to members of the Palestine Liberation Organization and officials from the Palestinian Authority, denying them visas as well.
