UN-backed experts cite possible US war crimes in Iran strikes

GENEVA — A panel of U.N. experts tasked with investigating potential war crimes committed by the United States in Iran have concluded they have "reasonable grounds" to believe the U.S. committed war crimes during two strikes, including one targeting a school in the southern city of Minab. The panel, led by jurist Sara Hossain from Bangladesh, published a report on Thursday detailing their findings.

While not legally binding, the report contributes to the growing body of international evidence gathered on human rights abuses in Iran, potentially paving the way for future justice efforts in international courts. The panel, established in 2022 by the U.N.'s top human rights body, the Human Rights Council, consists of independent experts and was scheduled to present their findings to the council on Monday, which is composed of 47 U.N. member countries. The team asserts that the U.S. conducted "indiscriminate" attacks during the strikes.
