UN-backed experts cite possible US war crimes in Iran strikes

A UN-backed investigation has concluded that Iran's response to 2025-2026 protests constituted egregious violations that can be considered crimes against humanity. The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission detailed mass killings, imprisonment, torture, and other cruel acts as part of a widespread assault on civilians. Iranian security forces were found to have killed dozens of people in each of the 31 provinces, with the highest tolls in Tehran, Karaj, Mashhad, Isfahan, and Rasht.

To control protests, forces positioned themselves on roofs and fired into crowds, used tear gas to trap demonstrators in narrow streets, and inflicted serious wounds using metal shotgun pellets. At least 221 children were killed, some as young as two years old. The regime also targeted healthcare facilities, detaining medical staff and preventing victims from receiving life-saving care.

A nationwide communications blackout lasted over five months, blocking vital information and emergency coordination. Thousands were arbitrarily arrested and detained, suffering torture, solitary confinement, and denial of legal counsel. Iranian authorities delayed releasing bodies, sometimes demanding money or false statements, and restricted memorial ceremonies.

The report notes that civilians were caught between the regime's violations and the US-Iran war, with the US suspected of war crimes during two air strikes that killed at least 178 civilians, including 120 children. The UN demands an immediate end to violations, reparations for victims, and a commitment to peace and accountability.
