Tusk, Fico to visit Ukraine on Friday

Poland intends to install an advanced electronic security system along more than 100 kilometers of its border with Ukraine, according to Polskie Radio. Brig. Gen. Wioleta Górzkowska of the Polish Border Guard confirmed the plan in a report on September 15. The system will feature monitoring equipment and motion sensors, augmenting existing physical barriers.

The electronic protection will be deployed along two distinct sections. The first project, covering 69 kilometers, falls under the jurisdiction of the Nadbużański Border Guard unit. The second section, encompassing 43 kilometers, is within the Bieszczady unit's area of responsibility. Altogether, the sections slated for the new electronic systems will span approximately 112 kilometers.

In addition to enhancing security on the border with Ukraine, Poland also plans to bolster border security along its frontier with Russia and Belarus. Measures include the installation of observation towers equipped with optoelectronic equipment and drone-detection systems on the Belarusian side. The projects are funded by the European Union.

However, Polish President Karol Nawrocki's veto of legislation on the use of SAFE program funds has hindered Poland's ability to carry out planned procurements worth 3 billion zlotys ($789 million). These procurements included armored vehicles and machine guns. Poland has previously bolstered security at border crossings along its frontier with Ukraine amid Russian strikes on western Ukraine and other threats stemming from Russia's war against Ukraine.
