N.B. utility secures wood pellet supply deal to transition only coal power plant

New Brunswick's Crown-owned utility, NB Power, has secured agreements with Canadian suppliers of sustainably sourced wood and agricultural hemp pellets to fuel its only coal-fired power plant. The Belledune Generating Station, located in northeast New Brunswick, has been in transition toward a renewable energy source for the past nine years, with the goal of phasing out coal by 2030.

NB Power's executive Lori Clark stated that the signing of these supply agreements marks a significant milestone, moving the transition from planning stages into execution. Clark expressed confidence in the path forward, emphasizing the utility's commitment to maintaining reliable service for customers while preparing the power station for long-term renewable operation.
