Today in Korean history

On September 9, 1894, the Joseon Dynasty inaugurated its inaugural modern primary school, Gyodong Elementary School, located in Insadong, Jongno Ward, central Seoul. Nearly a century and a half later, on October 12, 1996, a North Korean submarine washed ashore near Gangneung, a city in south-eastern South Korea. This event triggered a large-scale search operation, involving the recovery of 25 North Korean sailors and agents who had deserted their crippled submarine.

The majority of them were ultimately killed during the operation, although a small number were believed to have managed to return to North Korea.

In 2002, South Korea and North Korea embarked on a joint effort to restore two railway lines that had been severed prior to the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. These railways had been severed as a measure to prevent military supplies from being transported between the two nations. The reestablishment of these railways marked the beginning of renewed inter-Korean relations.

In 2013, North Korea's chief nuclear envoy, Kim Kye-gwan, called for an immediate resumption of nuclear talks with no preconditions. This marked a significant shift in North Korea's approach to nuclear diplomacy, as it had previously demanded substantial concessions before engaging in any dialogue.

The following year, in 2018, the leaders of South Korea and North Korea met for a three-day summit in Pyongyang. This was the third meeting between the two leaders. On the second day of the summit, the two heads of state agreed to a joint declaration outlining their commitment to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and fostering inter-Korean peace. This summit marked a significant step forward in the complex history of relations between the two Koreas.
