Robotic surgery cuts pain, shortens hospital stay — Surgeons

Robotic surgery at Redeemer’s Health Village in Ogun State has been shown to reduce patient pain and shorten hospital stays. This is due to the smaller incisions made by this minimally invasive procedure which cause less tissue damage. Surgeons highlighted that the robotic technology provides enhanced visualization and greater precision during operations.

This can help minimize blood loss and postoperative discomfort while supporting faster recovery. The hospital successfully performed its first robotic-assisted prostate cancer surgery on a middle-aged man. The CEO, Dr. Ademola Dada, stated that the goal is to make robotic surgery affordable for all patients with conditions like prostate cancer.

They also plan to expand this to other surgeries such as cervical, uterine, colonic cancers, and even congenital deformities. Professor Obi Davies-Ekwenna, a robotic surgeon and urology professor, explained how robotic surgery allows smaller incisions, magnified cameras for better visualization, and increased mobility for surgical tools compared to human hand movements.

Patients experience less pain and fewer wound infections due to the smaller incisions, and they can often go home the same day.
