PROTOA sets September 21 for indefinite strike over rising transport costs

The Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA), representing commercial transport operators in Ghana, has announced plans for an indefinite strike starting September 21, 2026. This strike is a response to the rising costs of operating and maintaining their vehicles, which have become increasingly difficult to manage. The association attributes the problem to the increasing prices of spare parts, port charges, taxes, and other expenses incurred in importing these parts into the country.

PROTOA claims that these additional costs have significantly increased the expenses associated with vehicle maintenance. The association issued a public notice on September 9, drawing attention to the challenges faced by drivers and vehicle owners. PROTOA's Public Relations Officer, Samuel Adu-Yeboah, revealed the strike plan during an interview on Channel One TV on September 16.

He stated that the association has already informed the government and the public about their intentions. However, he emphasized that the strike could be avoided if the government engages in negotiations before September 21. Adu-Yeboah expressed willingness to hold discussions with the Transport Ministry to find a solution to the issues faced by the association's members.
