President Ruto to attend 81st UN General Assembly next week

President William Ruto is set to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York next week, aiming to champion Kenya's interests across various global issues. Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Korir Sing’oei, revealed the decision was reached after months of consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the President’s office.

Dr. Sing’oei stated the President’s attendance is crucial, given the assembly’s focus on peace, security, sustainable development, climate resilience, digital governance, artificial intelligence, and UN reform.

The upcoming 81st UNGA, themed 'Restoring Trust and Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All', aims to address the evolving global landscape. Dr. Sing’oei emphasized that Kenya’s participation at a presidential level is vital due to pressing matters such as debt sustainability, climate finance, digital trade, and regional security.

As a leading African democracy and significant troop contributor, Kenya aims to voice its position on UN Security Council reform and inclusive global governance during the high-level negotiations.

Kenya previously benefited from the UNGA engagements, with US$340 million approved in 2023 for expanding the UN complex in Gigiri. The 2023 assembly also saw the signing of a US$60 million Millennium Challenge Corporation threshold programme for Nairobi’s connectivity, alongside investments in health, geothermal energy, and agri-tech.

On the technological front, Kenyan Technology Envoy Ambassador Phillip Thigo highlighted that AI will be central to Kenya’s participation, as the country has spearheaded two landmark UN resolutions on AI. The President’s Technology Envoy reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to promoting safe, inclusive, and responsible AI usage. Additionally, Kenya will lead a high-level event on AI middle powers and contribute to enhancing online safety for children.

Beyond these engagements, Kenya plans to champion an Africa Resilience Compact to bolster the continent’s response to climate-related challenges like El Niño. These initiatives are expected to position Kenya as an investment and conference destination while reinforcing its leadership in digital governance and emerging technologies.
