Lamola in the US ahead of the UN General Assembly

South African Minister Ronald Lamola has journeyed to Washington, D.C., to participate in various activities prior to attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The UNGA will convene from next Tuesday until the 28th of this month. South Africa is expected to be among the over 100 nations deliberating and voting on a range of global concerns, with a focus on advocating for multilateralism and global institution reform.

Before the UNGA, Lamola will first engage in a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation event and schedule friendly meetings with members of Congress. This visit to the United States follows the announcement of new visa restrictions by the Trump administration, which target individuals responsible for discriminatory policies in South Africa.

The timing of Lamola's arrival is particularly significant as it comes just days after Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled the policy, exacerbating an already tense relationship between Washington and Pretoria.

South Africa has vehemently defended its sovereign right to implement these laws, arguing that they aim to rectify the country's historical racial disparities. The UN reports that approximately 130 Heads of State and Government will attend the UNGA in person to share their perspectives with the global community. The theme for this year's assembly is "Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all".
