Omarchy gains $18.5M in backing, fresh converts – and fierce critics

David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of the Omarchy Arch-based Linux distribution and the Ruby on Rails web framework, has gained significant attention in the Linux community. In just three weeks since the last report on Omarchy, the project has received backing from various high-profile individuals and organizations, including Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI.

The Omarchy Foundation has now pledged approximately $18.5 million, which includes multiyear commitments and AI tokens. However, the project has also faced criticism and hostility from the free software community, with accusations of promoting fascist ideologies. Despite this, Omarchy continues to attract supporters, some of whom have been hired by the project, including a kernel developer, an infrastructure head, and the creator of Quickshell.
