Northwestern extends football coach David Braun's contract through the 2031 season

Braun has been leading the Northwestern football team since his appointment in 2023, after stepping in as interim head coach following Pat Fitzgerald’s dismissal amid a hazing controversy.

Braun’s tenure has seen a significant turnaround for the Wildcats, climbing from an 1-11 record in 2022 to a 20-19 mark as of Saturday’s matchup against Colorado. The team’s performance improved further in 2024 when Northwestern secured bowl eligibility, marking a resurgence after a 4-8 season the previous year.

Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Mark Jackson praised Braun, highlighting his ability to recruit high-character players who align with Northwestern’s academic environment and competitive spirit. Jackson emphasized Braun’s role in developing student-athletes, especially amid challenges in talent retention.

Braun began his tenure at Northwestern as a defensive coordinator under Fitzgerald in 2023 before taking over as interim head coach. His previous experience includes stints at North Dakota State, where he served as a defensive coordinator during two championship seasons. Born in Lake Forest, Illinois, Braun brings local roots to the program.
