Nigerian consulate issues safety advisory after eight women die in SA

The Consulate-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians residing in Kempton Park, Rhodesfield, and surrounding Ekurhuleni areas, following eight reported deaths of Nigerian women in the region. The incidents occurred over two months and are under investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The consulate claims that the deaths share "concerning similarities" and are investigating the possibility of a connection between the cases. However, they have not confirmed that a single perpetrator is responsible or that this is the work of a serial killer. The advisory, issued on September 16, 2026, warns Nigerians to be vigilant and adopt safety measures, particularly women and girls, when walking, jogging, exercising, or traveling alone in affected areas.

The consulate advises avoiding isolated, poorly lit, or deserted locations and recommends traveling in groups, varying routes and times, and informing others of one's plans. They urge Nigerians to avoid sharing unverified information and to report any credible leads to the SAPS directly. The consulate remains committed to assisting the ongoing investigation and will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
