NGEC Urges Nyamira Women to Contest MP, MCA and Governor Seats

The Commission urged women to look beyond the Woman Representative position and seek seats in Parliament, the county assembly and the gubernatorial race.

The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) has called on women in Nyamira County to actively contest positions at various political levels, including those of the Member of Parliament (MP), Member of County Assembly (MCA), and Governor, before the 2027 General Election. The Commission urged them to pursue these roles beyond the Woman Representative position.

NGEC Commissioner Caroline Lentupuru made these remarks during a women's engagement forum at Nyamira National Polytechnic. She emphasized that women are constitutionally entitled to run for these positions and should actively seek them, rather than relying on being appointed to the Woman Representative role. Lentupuru emphasized that women cannot continue to avoid political participation and stressed the importance of registering as voters, participating in elections, and supporting other women who aspire to hold elective offices.

She identified several barriers to women contesting political positions, such as gender-based violence during campaigns, lack of financial resources, and cultural stereotypes that discourage women from seeking political office. The NGEC is collaborating with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), security agencies, and county governments to create a secure environment for women candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.

Lentupuru expressed worry over the low number of women from the Gusii region who have been elected to competitive political offices since independence. She urged women in Nyamira and the neighboring Kisii County to overcome their fears and cultural limitations, take advantage of empowerment programs and affirmative action funds, and enhance their political involvement. She added that women must also support each other by voting and actively participating in the political process.

Lentupuru encouraged women to build their political networks and prepare for electoral contests. The NGEC is conducting a three-day dialogue in Meru, Nyamira, and Kisii counties, involving women, youth, and persons with disabilities. This dialogue aims to promote inclusive participation in the electoral process, address election-related gender-based violence, and strengthen the participation of underrepresented groups in leadership ahead of the 2027 General Election.
