Negri MB confirms proclamation removing Tuanku Muhriz

Negri Sembilan's Chief Minister, Datuk Ismail Lasim, has directed the state secretary to formally gazette the removal of Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, despite objections from the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU). The DKU maintains that the state executive council does not have the authority to decide the ruler’s position.

Ismail confirmed this decision, which was unanimously agreed upon at a meeting of the executive council on Tuesday. The state secretary has been instructed to proceed with the gazetting of the proclamation according to relevant regulations. The executive council's statement yesterday affirmed that Tuanku Muhriz’s removal in April was legitimate, with Tuanku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar becoming the new ruler.

However, the DKU argues that the executive council’s decision lacks legal effect, as it purports to confirm the removal, recognize a new ruler, and mandate immediate implementation. They maintain that Tuanku Muhriz is still the legitimate Yang di-Pertuan Besar and that matters involving Malay adat, including the appointment and removal of the ruler, fall under their jurisdiction under the Negri Sembilan Constitution.

The DKU also highlights that the matter is currently before the High Court in Seremban and urges all parties to respect the legal process. Lawyers for Tuanku Muhriz have accused the state government of staging a coup by declaring his removal, stating that the announcement violates interim injunctions issued by the High Court on June 5.

They intend to file contempt proceedings against the state government for allegedly breaching these injunctions.
