Need to switch your bank for FASTag? How new ‘OneTag’ offers smoother route

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced 'OneTag', an innovative FASTag portability service on the Rajmargyatra app. This service enables highway users to switch their issuer bank without the need to replace the FASTag sticker on their vehicle. Previously, users had to purchase a new FASTag to change their bank, which involved removing the existing tag from their vehicle.

The new system functions similarly to mobile number portability, allowing users to change their FASTag issuer without altering their vehicle's tag. This innovation, launched by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, is expected to benefit over 13 crore FASTag holders, with a significant portion of National Highway user-fee collections now being made digitally through FASTag.

To port a FASTag to a new bank, users must first log into the Rajmargyatra app, verify their eligibility by entering their registration number, receive a six-digit mobile verification code, select a new issuer, and complete customer verification and wallet onboarding with the new bank. After successful portability, the FASTag ID linked to the vehicle registration number remains unchanged, and users can continue using the existing tag to pay at toll plazas.

NHAI clarifies that a user can port to a new bank only after six months, as the previous issuer will close the existing FASTag wallet and refund the available balance, including any applicable adjustments. The six-month cooling period ensures that interoperable FASTags can only be ported again after this waiting period.

The 'OneTag' initiative aims to streamline FASTag lifecycle management, reduce the need for repeated tag production, lower operational costs, and improve the overall efficiency of the FASTag ecosystem. By allowing seamless issuer switching, this service enhances customer choice and contributes to a more efficient FASTag system.
