The New Patriotic Party (NPP) supports calls for a clearer separation between the Executive and the Legislature in proposed amendments to the 1992 Constitution, according to MP for Gushegu, Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana. The party believes Members of Parliament should not concurrently serve as Ministers, Deputy Ministers, or Regional Ministers, as this undermines parliamentary oversight and blurs accountability lines.
Sulemana argued that when MPs become Ministers, they are split between their legislative duties and executive responsibilities, causing absenteeism in Parliament and weakening debate on government policies. He noted that this practice also deprives constituencies of effective representation, as MP-Ministers spend most of their time at ministries instead of Parliament or in their constituencies.
