Man who sprayed vinegar at Rep. Ilhan Omar faces sentencing

Anthony Kazmierczak, a man in his mid-50s, is set to be sentenced on Wednesday for spraying vinegar at Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar during a Minneapolis town hall meeting. The incident occurred as the city was grappling with an immigration crackdown and the tragic deaths of two U.S. citizens.

Kazmierczak, who reached a deal with prosecutors, is expected to be handed down a 14-month prison term. During the hearing, he provided no explanation of the events that transpired on January 27. Witnesses reported that he jumped up from the audience, spraying liquid from a syringe at Omar and asserting she was "splitting Minnesota apart."

Omar, unharmed, continued with the town hall after the arrest. Kazmierczak later apologized to Omar, accepting responsibility for his actions. Authorities determined that he had sprayed her with a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar.

Kazmierczak had expressed online criticism of former President Joe Biden and described Democrats as "angry and liars." The attack on Omar took place amid Operation Metro Surge, an immigration crackdown that resulted in angry protests, arrests, and the loss of two U.S. citizens.
