Man jailed four years for stealing underwear, corsets & others

A 27-year-old unemployed man, Mutaru Mohammed, also known as Mutari, has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Dansoman Circuit Court in Accra. Mutari was accused of stealing clothing items valued at GH¢100,000 from a boutique owned by Matilda Agyapong. The stolen items included bed sheets, children's pyjamas, underwear, corsets, and nightwear.

Mutari pleaded guilty to the charge of theft, and the court, presided by His Honour Denis Eyram Fumey, convicted and sentenced him to four years' imprisonment for theft and an additional three years for conspiracy. Both sentences are to run concurrently. The crime was committed on August 15, 2026, in Accra, along with another suspect, David, who is still at large.

Prosecutors claim that Mutari and David conspired to steal from the boutique, located near Makola Market. Mutari entered the boutique through a back window of the washroom and stole the clothing items, which were then handed to David through the same window. The two then packed the items into sacks and left the scene. CCTV footage captured the incident, and police intelligence led to Mutari's arrest on September 6, 2026, at his hideout in Tudu, Accra.

During the investigation, Mutari admitted his involvement and assisted police in arresting Issahaku and Abdul-Latif, who he identified as persons who bought the stolen clothing. However, both suspects deny involvement in the alleged offense. The case against the other accused persons is still pending.
