Lee vows to crack down on transnational crimes, scalping

President Lee Jae Myung pledged on Thursday to intensify efforts to combat transnational crimes, including voice phishing targeting South Koreans. In a social media post featuring a video of a recent arrest, Lee emphasized that attempts to evade justice by fleeing abroad would no longer be effective. He stressed that anyone committing crimes against South Koreans would be pursued relentlessly and held accountable, regardless of their hiding place worldwide.

Lee expressed appreciation to Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Kazakh authorities for their collaboration in dismantling a significant voice phishing operation. On August 5, the Korean National Police Agency reported that a joint task force focused on transnational crimes had apprehended 14 members of the South Korean scam ring during a joint operation in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on July 23.

Additionally, Lee vowed to take a firm stance against scalpers, citing a recent arrest of a scalper who profited from ticket reselling at inflated prices for idol performances, foreign artist concerts, and sporting events. Lee vowed to thoroughly crack down on scalping crimes that deny individuals fair opportunities to attend events and ensure that all illicit profits are confiscated, warning that those who gain unfair profits through scalping would face severe consequences.
