King Charles warns of ‘existential danger’ of AI falling into wrong hands

King Charles delivered a warning to AI executives regarding the "existential dangers" that may arise if the technology falls into the wrong hands. This warning came during a summit he convened at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, where he gathered technology leaders from companies such as Nvidia, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The summit also featured the UK's AI Minister, the Pope's advisor, and representatives from other AI firms.

The King expressed concern that AI could develop darker capacities and be used in potentially catastrophic ways, emphasizing the need for adequate consideration of these risks. He urged the attendees to ensure that AI remained in service to humanity, community, and the natural world. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, a key industry leader, echoed this sentiment by stating that safety was paramount and that companies should hold back products and continue engineering if they were not safe enough.

Huang also highlighted the importance of open models, which grant users direct access to software, to ensure that people and countries do not fall behind. Meanwhile, DeepMind co-founder Sir Demis Hassabis cautioned that artificial general intelligence, systems that could match or surpass human capabilities across multiple tasks, could arrive within a few short years.

He acknowledged the non-zero chance of something going wrong but advocated for a sensible middle ground, suggesting humanity could mitigate risks if given the opportunity to do so collectively.
