Israeli lawmaker writes UN, demands Nnamdi Kanu’s release

Israeli lawmaker MK Afef Abed has written to the United Nations (UN) demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu is currently serving a life sentence in Sokoto Prison, Nigeria, after being convicted on terrorism charges by the Nigerian government. The letter, dated September 1, 2026, was addressed to the UN Secretary-General, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Chair-Rapporteur of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

Abed stated his letter was motivated by his commitment to human rights, due process, and international law. He cited the 2022 UN Working Group's Opinion No. 25/2022, which found Kanu's detention to be arbitrary and recommended his immediate release, compensation, and reparations. The group also investigated the circumstances surrounding Kanu's arrest and transfer between Kenya and Nigeria.

Abed emphasized the importance of upholding international human rights standards and the ongoing legal proceedings involving Kanu, noting recent developments, including his conviction on terrorism charges and allegations of inadequate medical care. He called on the UN and relevant mechanisms to continue monitoring the situation, urging the UN to review Nigeria's implementation of the UN Working Group's Opinion and recommendations.
