IPCR urges National Assembly to strengthen peace legislation

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has urged the National Assembly to enhance legislation that fosters social harmony and conflict-sensitive governance. This call was made by the IPCR's Director-General, Joseph Ochogwu, during a media briefing to mark the 2026 International Day of Peace. Ochogwu emphasized that peace should be considered a deliberate, sustained investment, not just the absence of conflict.

He highlighted Nigeria's multifaceted challenges, including violent extremism, farmer-herder conflicts, banditry, communal tensions, youth restiveness, climate-induced resource competition, misinformation, disinformation, and economic pressures. Ochogwu stressed that peace is integral to addressing various societal issues, such as food security, education, healthcare, and investment.

He advocated for strengthening local government institutions to enable better conflict management, prevention, and resolution. Additionally, he encouraged youth engagement, skills acquisition, and investment in the digital economy to provide alternative paths for young Nigerians, away from crime and extremism. Ochogwu called on various stakeholders, including the National Assembly, security agencies, private sector, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, women and youth groups, and the media, to contribute to peace efforts.

The IPCR's 2026 International Day of Peace activities include a peace prayer at the National Mosque, a similar prayer at the National Christian Centre, a peace walk, a national peace lecture, and a football match.
