Heavy rain and floods in northern Vietnam submerge homes and disrupt economy

Hanoi, Vietnam (AP) — Intense rainfall triggered flooding throughout various regions of northern Vietnam on Thursday, disrupting transportation, submerging residences, and causing several rivers to exceed hazardous levels, according to authorities and state media reports. The week-long downpour has brought unprecedented amounts of rain to northern and north-central Vietnam, with certain areas accumulating over 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) of precipitation, stated the disaster prevention department.

Over 2,000 homes have been inundated, with numerous vital transportation routes rendered impassable, and more than 1,000 households cut off from essential services. Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces, encompassing both lowland and mountainous areas to the south of Hanoi's capital, have been among the worst-affected regions. Vietnam, one of the world's most climate-vulnerable nations, is particularly susceptible to flooding.

Following a series of severe storms last year, the country has sought innovative strategies to mitigate flood risks. In Thanh Hoa province, officials advised students to remain indoors due to hazardous travel conditions caused by flooding, as reported by state media. Heavy rains and flooding have submerged or damaged approximately 10,014 hectares (24,745 acres) of rice and other crops, with the most significant losses reported in Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An provinces.

Thousands of livestock and poultry have also perished as a result of the calamity. "The flood occurs every year," remarked Ninh Binh resident Tran Ngoc Tai, emphasizing that locals have been adequately prepared with essential supplies. Many streets in Hanoi were severely flooded on Thursday morning, with water levels reaching nearly a meter (3.2 feet) in some locations, causing considerable traffic disruptions and hindering residents' ability to commute to work, drop off their children, and access essential amenities.
