Government not afraid of media criticism – Kwakye Ofosu

Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu expressed confidence that the government is not intimidated by media criticism, stating that constructive dialogue with journalists is crucial for reviewing policies and programs. Addressing the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) Steering Committee meeting in Accra, Mr. Ofosu emphasized that regular interaction between government and media is vital for ensuring responsiveness to citizens' concerns.

He stressed the government's appreciation of the media's role in scrutinizing its activities and gathering public feedback. However, the Minister cautioned against the misuse of journalism and freedom of speech, asserting that those who violate laws must be held responsible. He clarified that enforcing laws against individuals whose speech may threaten public safety should not be seen as an attempt to undermine freedom of expression.

The government, according to Mr. Ofosu, aims to safeguard freedom of speech while respecting the law. He also highlighted President John Dramani Mahama's support for the media and the government's dedication to fostering a favorable environment for the media industry's growth. The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) is set to undergo modernization within the next 24 months to adapt to the evolving media landscape.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to establish a redevelopment fund to bolster the private media sector, described as a mutually beneficial arrangement. Regarding media regulation, Mr. Ofosu suggested reviewing the National Media Commission (NMC) to better align it with current industry developments, focusing on content quality and professional standards.

The government rejected any notion of controlling state media, affirming their commitment to professional operation and adherence to ethical guidelines. The minister reiterated the government's dedication to collaborating with media stakeholders to bolster journalism, uphold professional standards, and promote a thriving media environment in Ghana, amid ongoing discussions about the government-media relationship and the regulatory framework governing journalism in Ghana.
