Google goes in-depth, and a bit NSFW, on Noto 3D emoji as Android rollout expands

Google has unveiled an in-depth look at Noto 3D emoji, a 3D version of the popular emoticons, as its rollout extends beyond Pixel devices. The design process, according to Google Design, involved meticulous hand-drawn and sculpted character creation to ensure emotional clarity. The goal was to preserve the essence of each symbol, utilizing 3D to give characters a body while maintaining illustration for emotional soul.

Research indicated that intricate anatomical details can impede the speed at which our brains process emotions, so excessive details were minimized. Furthermore, overly complex props and textures can hinder comprehension, particularly at smaller pixel sizes of 18x18. Google's aim was to keep each emoji at a maximum of three essential details to effectively convey its meaning.

In transitioning to 3D, Google posed a thought-provoking question: "What does the back of a smiley face look like?" This led to some intriguing findings, such as the revelation that the poodle emoji originally displayed only three legs. The research also suggested that people tend to empathize more with complete silhouettes, especially when depicting real animals.

Consequently, Google shifted away from floating heads and focused on conveying an animal's stance, paws, and posture to better express intent. A prime example of this adaptation is the updated raccoon emoji, now depicted in full mischievous form in 3D.

The rollout of Noto 3D began following the Pixel 11 launch and has since expanded across Google apps, Android, and a selection of devices from various partners, including Nothing, Lenovo, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, vivo, iQOO, HONOR, TECNO, Infinix, itel, Motorola, and more.
