Ghana doesn’t need more MPs – NPP rejects parliamentary seats expansion plan

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed the proposal from the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) to enlarge Parliament from 276 seats to a maximum of 300. Sulemana Tampuli Alhassan, representing Gushegu, announced the party's stance during a press conference on Thursday, September 17, 2026. Tampuli contended that Ghana's existing parliamentary representation is adequate for its population size.

He urged any augmentation in the number of lawmakers to be substantiated by compelling evidence showing it would address existing issues within Parliament. According to Tampuli, both the CRC and the government advocated for the expanded legislature, proposing a ceiling of 300 legislators. The additional 24 seats would be allocated based on proportional representation, encompassing women, the youth, and individuals with disabilities.

The NPP opposes this recommendation, asserting that Ghana's current parliamentary representation is already adequate relative to its population. They questioned the rationale behind needing more than 276 MPs, given that a country with a population of over 240 million, like Nigeria, has a combined House of Representatives and Senate numbering approximately 430 members for its populace.

Tampuli emphasized that there is no conclusive evidence suggesting that increasing the number of parliamentary seats would inherently enhance Parliament's effectiveness.
