Gender Minister hails Ghana School Feeding Programme

Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, praised the Ghana School Feeding Programme as a prominent means by which the Ministry impacts the lives of Ghanaian schoolchildren daily. She highlighted that each school day, 4.53 million Ghanaian children partake in a warm, nutritious meal through the program, a figure that rose from 4.03 million in 2024.

Addressing a Government Accountability Series Press Conference at the Presidency in Accra, Dr. Lartey disclosed that in 2024, the government allocated GH₵1,393,000,000 to the program, feeding 4,029,580 pupils at a rate of GH₵1.50 per meal. She announced that in 2025, the government under President John Dramani Mahama increased the grant to GH₵2.00 per meal – the first rise in years, backed by a budget of GH₵1,788,000,000, which reached 4,231,000 pupils.

Dr. Lartey mentioned that in 2026, the allocation further increased to GH₵1,982,000,000, a 42% rise, maintaining the grant at GH₵2.00 per meal while serving 4,527,636 children daily. She added that alongside this funding growth, they cleared all caterer arrears from 2024 and paid the first and second terms of the 2025/26 academic year.

Dr. Lartey also mentioned that they expanded compliance monitoring from 4,419 schools in 2025 to 8,270 schools in 2026, and trained 20,171 caterers and head cooks in practical nutrition standards.
