However, the decision sparked internal debate, with a 4.0 percent rate advocated by three dissenting votes. BoE governor Andrew Bailey cautioned that prolonged instability in the Middle East could necessitate tighter monetary policy.

While recent energy cost increases have had limited impact on UK prices and wages, Bailey warned that prolonged volatility would intensify inflation and increase the likelihood of raising the benchmark rate to bring inflation back to its 2 percent target. Inflation recently rose to 3.1 percent. The conflict in Iran has driven fuel and gas prices higher, potentially creating new inflationary pressure.

Market expectations of an imminent rate hike stand at around 65 percent ahead of the BoE's meeting in early November. Inflation in Britain surged to 2.9 percent.
