GCB’s Helmet On, Life On campaign targets motorcycle safety in Accra CBD

GCB Bank PLC, Ghana's largest commercial bank, has rolled out the Helmet On, Life On Campaign in Accra's Central Business District (CBD) to promote safe motorcycle use among commercial riders, delivery personnel, and pillion passengers. The initiative, which engaged over 500 riders, is part of GCB's Staff Community Impact Programme (SCIP), an employee-led effort aiming to positively impact one million Ghanaians through 95 community projects nationwide.

Focused on busy commercial areas like Makola Market, Tudu, Kantamanto, Agbogbloshie, and Kinbu-High Street, the campaign emerged from employee observations and stakeholder consultations highlighting growing road safety concerns in these busy zones. With the collaboration of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the programme offers road safety education and certified training workshops covering defensive riding techniques, hazard identification, proper helmet use and maintenance, and emergency response procedures.

Upon completing the training, riders receive Safe Rider Certificates and identification badges, encouraging responsible riding behavior and fostering a network of safety-conscious riders. The initiative also aims to improve riders' understanding of road hazards, emergency preparedness, and the significance of consistent helmet use.

The campaign benefits not only direct participants but also commuters, traders, market users, delivery service providers, riders' families, and the wider public through safer riding practices and increased road safety awareness across the CBD. The Accra Central Zonal Manager, Juliet Onny, emphasized the importance of preventive actions in protecting lives and livelihoods for motorcycle riders who contribute significantly to the CBD's economic activity.

The Helmet On, Life On Campaign is the 16th of 95 SCIP projects across Ghana, demonstrating GCB Bank's commitment to preventive community interventions, volunteerism, and addressing practical challenges faced by communities.
