Foreign ministry says Hormuz talks focus on navigation, energy security over U.S. ties

Discussions regarding Korea's potential involvement in securing the Strait of Hormuz center on navigation safety, energy security, and the well-being of nationals, according to a senior foreign ministry official on Thursday. The South Korean government is evaluating whether to deploy military assets to the vital waterway, following pressure from the Donald Trump administration to offer contributions.

First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo informed the National Assembly's foreign affairs and unification committee that the government is not approaching this issue from the standpoint of Korea-U.S. relations, but rather in the context of guaranteeing safe navigation, securing energy supply routes, and ensuring the safety of the population.

Park addressed the frequent use of the term "deployment" in South Korea, stating that the government has been engaging closely with the international community to determine how to make a "contribution" to restoring regional stability. Reports have suggested that assets under consideration for potential deployment could include maritime patrol aircraft and explosive ordnance disposal capabilities.
