Foreign ministry says Hormuz talks focus on navigation, energy security over US ties

South Korea's foreign ministry has clarified that discussions surrounding Korea's potential involvement in securing the Strait of Hormuz are centered on navigation safety, energy security, and the protection of citizens, rather than US relations, according to a senior foreign ministry official. The South Korean government is evaluating whether to deploy military assets to the vital waterway due to pressure from the Trump administration, but this is being assessed without considering the Korea-US relationship, but in terms of maintaining safe navigation, secure energy supply routes, and the safety of its people, First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo stated before the National Assembly's foreign affairs and unification committee.

Park addressed the frequent use of the term "deployment" in South Korean media, explaining that the government has been engaged in detailed discussions with the international community on how to contribute to restoring stability in the region. Reports suggest that potential assets considered for deployment could include maritime patrol aircraft and equipment for dealing with explosives.
