Falconets smash England 3-0 to reach U20 World Cup quarter-final

The Nigeria Super Falconets secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland with a 3-0 victory over England on Thursday. The match at the Bielsko-Biala Stadium was a thrilling contest, and the Falconets emerged victorious due to their strong attacking prowess. Goals were scored by Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowe, and Mary Mmadu.

Nigeria took an early lead in the 8th minute through a brilliant solo effort from midfielder Rafiu. She outpaced England midfielder May Cruft in the penalty area and found the back of the net with a low shot. The young Lionesses had a penalty opportunity to equalize, but goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma saved the day, knocking the shot off the crossbar and onto the goalpost.

The second half began with Aduku leading the Nigerian team, and they capitalized on a corner kick delivered by the young striker. Akekoromowe capitalized on a half-cleared corner, slamming a volley into the net at the near post for a 2-0 advantage. Nigeria secured their third goal on the 73rd minute with Mmadu's side-footed effort, following up on Akekoromowe's interception near the box.

This victory marks Nigeria's second win over England and their unbeaten record against the European nation. The Falconets now join the ranks of only nine times in tournament history that Nigeria has reached the quarter-final stage. This is also the Falconets' first-ever appearance in the last-eight stage since 2022, where they will face either Poland or Colombia on September 20.
