EU chief backs plan for Canada to become ‘associate member’

On Wednesday, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, endorsed initiatives for Canada to become the EU's inaugural "associate member". She expressed her intention to facilitate "opening the door" for Canada, which would entail enhanced collaboration in various critical sectors. Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, had recently mentioned the prospect of establishing a "unique alliance" with the EU.

The European Union and Canada share a common perspective on numerous global issues, including artificial intelligence, climate change, and international affairs. Both entities have demonstrated solidarity on pressing matters such as the conflict in Ukraine, defense matters, raw materials, and supply chain management. Von der Leyen reiterated that their partnership is not directed against any other nation, but rather aimed at bolstering their collective strength.

While no specifics were provided regarding the exact nature of Canada's potential membership, von der Leyen highlighted sectors such as manufacturing, technology, AI, defense, energy, critical minerals, and economic security as potential areas of cooperation. The EU chief emphasized that these partnerships are strategic choices for Europe and are a response to the fragmentation in the international rules-based system.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the annual keynote speech in Strasbourg and is scheduled to address the parliament on Thursday. Recently, Canada and the United States witnessed the collapse of trade talks, leading to the imposition of new tariffs. The strained relationship between the two North American neighbors has been further exacerbated by U.S. President Donald Trump's statements suggesting Canada might become a "51st state".
