Dubai International Film Festival to return in December 2027 after decade-long break

Dubai International Film Festival will return in December 2027, a decade after its last occurrence, according to Mona Al Marri, director general of the Government of Dubai Media Office. The announcement was made at the Arab Media Summit, where Al Marri emphasized the significance of the festival's revival as a step towards developing the film industry in the region.

The festival, which first launched in 2004 and ran annually until 2017, served as a vital platform for Arab filmmakers and international screenings alike. Today's event, noted Al Marri, represents a departure from the past, as the region and filmmaking have evolved. She further highlighted the UAE's commitment to investing in creators and attracting creative talent to foster growth in the industry.

The festival's impact over its 14 editions was substantial, fostering collaboration among filmmakers, facilitating opportunities for Arab talents, and positioning the UAE on the international film map. Emirati filmmaker Ali Mostafa expressed his enthusiasm for the return, stating that it was a significant event not only for filmmakers and the industry but also for Dubai as a whole.

The festival, which played an integral role in the city's cultural calendar, brought people together and held immense significance in its return. During its original run, the festival provided Arab filmmakers with a platform to premiere their work, compete for awards, and meet industry professionals who could help their films reach wider audiences.

Its Enjaaz fund supported post-production for films like Omar and Wadjda, while the Muhr Emirati competition offered a dedicated showcase for UAE directors. Over 100 Arab films were featured in the 174-film program of the 2011 edition, alongside major international releases. Notable attendees included international stars like George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Patrick Stewart, Shah Rukh Khan, and Morgan Freeman, as well as Emirati filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad, whose film Omar premiered at the 2013 festival and won the Muhr Arab Feature award.

International premieres, including George Clooney's Michael Clayton and George Lucas's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, showcased Dubai's growing involvement in the global film industry.
