Drew Doughty named captain of the Kings, succeeding Anze Kopitar

On Wednesday, Drew Doughty was appointed captain of the Los Angeles Kings, succeeding Anze Kopitar after his retirement. Doughty, the 15th captain in team history, had previously served as an alternate captain since the 2016-17 season. The 36-year-old defenseman holds franchise records for goals, assists, points, and games played while in net for the Kings.

He was a vital contributor during the team's Stanley Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2014. Doughty expressed his honor and pride at becoming the team's leader in a statement released by the organization. The Kings' general manager, Ken Holland, stated that Doughty earned the right to make significant decisions regarding his future, and the team will work with him moving forward.

Doughty's eight-year contract with the Kings, signed in June 2018, ends after the 2026-27 season. Currently, forward Adrian Kempe and defenseman Mikey Anderson serve as alternate captains, while forward Artemi Panarin, acquired from the New York Rangers in February, adds to the leadership group.
