Don’t miss legendary photographer Tim Walker’s stunning new exhibition, with its whimsical erotic energy

Tim Walker, the acclaimed British photographer, is set to grace the National Portrait Gallery with his latest exhibition, "Fairyland: Love and Legends," from October 9, 2026, to February 7, 2027. The exhibition showcases over fifty years of Queer activism, community, love, culture, and life through Walker's unique lens of whimsical erotic energy.

Walker first gained prominence in the 1990s with his distinctive style of fantastical and surreal photography, drawing inspiration from fairy tales. Before establishing his career, he worked at the Cecil Beaton archive and studied at Exeter College of Art before becoming an assistant for Richard Avedon. His work has been featured in renowned publications like British Vogue, Vanity Fair, and i-D, and he has authored seven books and created short films and projects with musicians.

"Fairyland: Love and Legends" is a testament to Walker's extraordinary talent and his commitment to celebrating Queer culture. The exhibition features 250 specially made portraits of activists, social workers, and nightlife performers, alongside Sir Ian McKellen, Miriam Margolyes, Chappell Roan, and Boy George. The portraits span a range of styles, from outrage and protest to joy, and serve as a tribute to the trailblazers of the 1970s and 80s who fought for love and justice.

Designed by Walker's longtime collaborator Shona Heath, the exhibition is a departure from traditional survey of portraiture. It blends lively portraits with marvelous landscapes, drawing inspiration from folklore, mythology, and fantasy. The exhibition also includes elaborate sets, installations, and huge props, creating a fantastical atmosphere that feels like stepping into a magical realm. The use of collages and meticulous construction of props further enhances the whimsical and fairy-tale aesthetic.

Throughout the exhibition, Walker pays homage to the pioneers of the Queer movement, including founding members of the Gay Liberation Front and Stonewall. He memorializes their contributions in a style inspired by sixteenth-century portraits of Tudor aristocracy, blending traditional studio portrait photography with his signature whimsical and surreal approach. The exhibition also features written notes and behind-the-scenes materials, offering insight into Walker's creative processes and inspirations.
