Croc-habitat river gets green light for Brisbane 2032 Olympic rowing

The 2032 Brisbane Olympics have chosen the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, a river known for its crocodile population, as the venue for rowing and canoeing events. Despite the controversy surrounding the choice, the river has been approved by the sport's governing bodies after a comprehensive assessment. The main concerns included technical specifications, fairness in competition conditions, and the lack of accommodations for athletes and spectators.

World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide (formerly International Canoe Federation) both endorsed the river, citing the thorough and robust assessment that considered river flows, water levels, and wind conditions. While the threat of crocodile sightings was not addressed in the assessment, officials have assured that processes will be in place for reporting such incidents.

Brisbane 2032 president Andrew Liveris expressed enthusiasm, emphasizing the team's commitment to delivering a successful event in just under six years.
