Cosmo Whyte Returns to the University of Michigan With a Powerful New Exhibition at Stamps Gallery

The University of Michigan's Stamps Gallery is hosting an extensive mid-career exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte, titled "Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet, Beyond the Eye." The free exhibition, open from September 11 to December 12, 2026, showcases a collection of drawing, sculpture, installation, and research-driven works that delve into two central themes of Whyte's practice: the archive as an exploration site, and migration as a continuous process of transformation.

Whyte, who holds a degree from the University of Michigan's Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, has drawn inspiration from his Jamaican heritage and experiences living in various cities such as Atlanta, Ann Arbor, Chicago, Florida, and Los Angeles. His work often explores Black identity, migration, displacement, and belonging, utilizing public and personal archives connected to African diaspora and Caribbean histories, transforming them through unique materials.

The exhibition provides visitors with large-scale drawings, pixelated images, sculptural installations, and hand-painted beaded curtains that challenge the legibility of recorded history. Whyte states, "I don't have the answers, and I'm not interested in providing them," instead, he aims to provoke thought-provoking questions about politics, race, identity, displacement, and the power to shape historical records.

As part of his return to the University of Michigan, Whyte will participate in the popular free Penny Stamps Speaker Series at the Michigan Theater on September 24 at 5:30 PM, followed by a public reception at Stamps Gallery from 6:30-8:30 PM. The exhibition is free and accessible to the public at Stamps Gallery, located at 201 S. Division St. in downtown Ann Arbor.
