Bill requiring children to support ageing parents likely next year, says Kulasegaran

IPOH, Sept 17 — Deputy Minister Kulasegaran has revealed that the proposed filial law, requiring children to support their ageing parents, is still under consultation and likely to be introduced early next year. Kulasegaran explained that the Bill, not falling under the Law and Institutional Reform ministry, would be handled by the family and welfare ministry, where his department is collaborating.

Malaysia has looked into similar laws in countries like Singapore and India, where parents can seek court orders for financial support from adult children. The government is currently conducting consultations with non-governmental organisations, relevant departments, and other stakeholders before making a final decision. Kulasegaran acknowledged the need for such legislation, noting that elderly parents had also raised the issue.

Additionally, he mentioned that the topic of mandatory caning was also being discussed following a recent impact assessment meeting, but he could not disclose specific details due to the Official Secrets Act.
