Asian Games chief defends ‘functional’ rooms after backlash

NAGOYA: In response to criticism surrounding the accommodation for Asian Games athletes in Japan, the chief organiser has defended the "functional" arrangements being made. More than 17,000 competitors and officials are set to participate in the continent's largest sporting event, which kicks off on Saturday in Nagoya. To keep costs down, athletes and officials are lodging in temporary accommodations, including a cruise liner, wooden containers, and hotel rooms.

However, the plan has faced initial setbacks, with South Korean officials deeming the container huts "the worst ever" and citing beds that are too short. A player from South Korea's men's basketball team even posted a video of a leaking sink and a soaked floor in his hut, pleading for assistance. Organising Committee President Hideaki Omura assured that efforts are being made to enhance comfort for athletes, and that he will address individual opinions as they arise.

He also acknowledged the shortage of accommodation but emphasized that the priority is ensuring athletes' safety, especially given Nagoya's recent heavy rainfall and the common occurrence of typhoons in Japan.
