Anwar: MA63 is a national promise, must not be seen as only affecting Sabah and Sarawak

KUCHING, Sept 17 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) is a national commitment that must be upheld, regardless of regional perceptions. He reminded that this solemn pledge was made by past Malaysian leaders to strengthen the country's unity. Anwar stressed that resolving MA63 is crucial, especially as some individuals on the Peninsula seem to view it as solely a matter for Sabah and Sarawak.

At the national-level 2026 Malaysia Day Celebration in Kuching, Anwar highlighted that nine issues related to the agreement have been settled under the Madani Government. He pointed out that Sabah and Sarawak's Public Works Department and Department of Irrigation and Drainage have been acknowledged as technical departments, and permanent representatives from both states are now part of the Inland Revenue Board.

Additionally, the Madani Government has transferred the regulation of electricity to Sabah and handed over Bintulu Port to Sarawak. Anwar views these actions as promises made for the entire nation, as the prosperity of Sarawak ultimately contributes to the prosperity of Malaysia.
