Abang Johari: Sarawak’s progress should benefit all of Malaysia

KUCHING, Sept 17 — Sarawak's state government is set on a clear path to ensure the territory thrives within a stable Malaysia, with its own economic growth acting as a catalyst for the nation's strength, according to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The premier outlined plans to bolster the economic, energy, industrial, and technology sectors, alongside expanding regional development, saying these efforts would cement Sarawak's crucial role in the country's prosperity.

In his address during the national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching, Abang Johari emphasized that the state's achievements should not only uplift Sarawak's residents but also contribute significantly to Malaysia's collective development and prosperity. The premier expressed satisfaction with the Federal Government's commitment to endorsing the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which includes safeguarding Sarawak and Sabah's parliamentary representation at no less than one-third, establishing a revenue-sharing formula with Sarawak, and enhancing tourism sector cooperation.

Abang Johari believes these steps will foster stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government. He expressed hope that acknowledging the rights and special privileges of Sabah and Sarawak will become a national priority.
