9 sent to prosecution for alleged extortion targeting foreigners in Yangsan, Gimhae

Yangsan and Gimhae, two cities in southeastern South Korea, have seen nine individuals referred to the prosecution for alleged extortion of foreigners, according to local authorities. Between June and July, two suspects in their 20s extorted approximately 2 million won (US$1,450) from foreign motorcycle riders on 24 separate occasions.

The suspects allegedly threatened victims with police involvement when they could not pay, targeting foreigners who feared exposure of their undocumented status or unregistered motorcycles. Similarly, seven teenagers in Gimhae were transferred to the prosecution in September 2025 and June 2026 for intimidating foreign motorcyclists without license plates, such as by kicking their vehicles.

No money was taken in these cases, as victims fled in fear or struggled to communicate due to language barriers. Police officials emphasized their commitment to cracking down on crimes that exploit the vulnerable status of foreign nationals.
