25 varsities, teaching hospitals connected to solar electricity – REA

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has connected 22 federal universities and three teaching hospitals to solar electricity through its Energizing Education Program. At a recent ceremony, the Managing Director of REA, Abba Aliyu, highlighted the completion of a 3MW captive solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja, contributing to the deployment of over 100 megawatts of clean energy to tertiary institutions.

This initiative is benefiting more than 300,000 students and over 50,000 staff members by providing reliable power to essential campus infrastructure. Aliyu emphasized that the program's true value lies in the improved learning environment, more reliable laboratories, enhanced campus safety, and reduced financial pressures on universities.

The Minister of Power, Joseph O. Tegbe, underscored the link between Nigeria's energy transition and human capital development, asserting that the investment demonstrates the practical benefits of renewable energy for universities. Tegbe also highlighted the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO), which aims to ensure the long-term management and performance of these renewable energy assets.

Olufemi Akinyelure, Head of the Nigeria Electrification Project, stressed that the project's significance extends beyond the immediate benefits, as reliable electricity empowers education, fosters innovation, and secures Nigeria's future. The Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, stressed that dependable power supply is essential for effective teaching, research, laboratory work, digital services, and creating a conducive learning environment.
