Village votes to leave UK over asylum housing plan

In a village near Bicester, Oxfordshire, villagers have voted to become independent from the UK in a symbolic referendum, protesting against plans to house over 1,000 asylum seekers at a local military base. The 350 residents of Piddington voted on Tuesday, with 285 in favor of leaving the UK, 26 against, and one spoiled ballot.

Susannah Parden, vice chair of the parish council, declared, "We are Piddington the village that roars." The government, however, stated they would not reconsider the proposal, citing the need to house asylum seekers and process claims more quickly. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy acknowledged the distress caused to Piddington residents but said the government was not unusual in this regard.

Women in the village expressed concerns over the safety and security implications of the plans, with over 130 female residents writing to female MPs to voice their opposition. Local politicians and charities criticized the government's proposals, stating the location was unsuitable for housing asylum seekers. Piddington resident Christina Gower, 26, expressed disappointment over the drastic measures needed to draw attention to the issue, emphasizing the symbolic impact on the rest of the UK.
