After 34 years, we’re still struggling – Alan Kyerematen renews vow to break NPP-NDC duopoly

Alan Kyerematen, founder and leader of the United Party (UP), has restated his commitment to ending the political dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Kyerematen highlighted that the two-party system since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1992 has not led to the level of development the country should have achieved.

Despite the challenges of breaking the NPP and NDC duopoly, Mr Kyerematen remains resolute, confident that divine support would have given him the strength and determination needed to overcome the obstacles. He emphasized that the NPP and NDC have governed Ghana for over three decades, yet fundamental issues such as poor road infrastructure, electricity instability, and delayed developmental projects persist.

"After 34 years, we are still struggling," Mr Kyerematen stated. He pointed out that Ghana could have made greater strides in development if successive governments had been able to effectively implement and build upon ongoing initiatives. Drawing a contrast with China’s rapid transformation over three decades, Mr Kyerematen suggested that sustained development efforts could propel Ghana to greater heights.

He cited China’s progress as an example of what can be achieved through consistent and focused development strategies, noting that the country’s transformation has made it one of the most powerful nations globally. Mr Kyerematen has previously called for a departure from the NPP-NDC duopoly, arguing that the dominance of these two parties has fueled political divisions and governance instability.
