US House passes third resolution in four months attempting to curb US military presence in Iran

The US House of Representatives has passed a third resolution in four months aimed at curbing US military presence in Iran. The Democrat-sponsored resolution, initially introduced in April, mandates President Donald Trump to remove all US Armed Forces from Iran, except those necessary for defending allies from immediate attack. This resolution passed with a 220-204 vote, marking the third time the House has approved a similar war powers resolution.

Seven Republicans supported the measure, a significant increase from the four who did so in previous votes. The resolution underscores Iran's accountability for various actions, including killing Americans, supporting terrorism, threatening the Strait of Hormuz, and developing nuclear weapons. One Republican who voted in favor, Rep. Zach Nunn, expressed reluctance to support another open-ended war, citing his service in the Middle East.

The House previously approved a war powers resolution in June, marking a significant shift in House policy, which had historically blocked such resolutions aimed at restricting the administration's authority. Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Thomas Massie filed articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, alleging abuse of power for issuing an order for hostilities against Iran without congressional approval.

Massie's impeachment attempt, though unlikely to pass, could compel a difficult vote for some Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections.
