US enforces visa ban over crime, discrimination in South Africa

The United States has introduced a new visa restriction policy targeting certain South Africans, citing incidents of "racially motivated crime and government-sponsored discrimination." The rule prohibits entry for those involved in or advocating for actions that lead to land seizures without compensation, racial bias, and the incitement of violence against minority ethnic or racial groups.

The State Department asserts that such actions directly undermine peace, economic stability, and the rule of law, and are incompatible with the principles of American foreign policy. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently called on South Africa's ANC-led government to promptly address these "egregious actions." The U.S. policy was instigated by President Donald Trump's Executive Order 14204, aimed at addressing issues affecting Afrikaners and other minorities in South Africa.

Pretoria resists Washington's stance, asserting that its domestic policies and foreign relations are matters of national sovereignty. The ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two nations stem from South Africa's involvement in an International Court of Justice case against Israel and its participation in the 18th BRICS Summit in India.

President Cyril Ramaphosa met with leaders from Russia, China, and Iran during the summit. Unless there are last-minute adjustments, South Africa will not attend the upcoming G20 Summit in Miami, Florida, due to the U.S. government's exclusion decision.
