[UPDATED] Anwar calls urgent meeting tomorrow to address higher electricity bills

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday to discuss ways to alleviate the financial strain of rising electricity bills on Malaysian households. The gathering will bring together representatives from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), and the Finance Ministry (MOF).

Anwar acknowledged public concern over recent increases in electricity costs and emphasized that the government remains committed to protecting the majority of households, which comprise around 80% of domestic users with monthly electricity consumption of 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) or less. However, he noted that the recent surge in electricity consumption due to hotter weather and haze has pushed some households above the 600 kWh threshold, rendering them subject to the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA).

In response, the MADANI government will convene the special meeting to explore immediate mitigation measures aimed at reducing the impact of these higher electricity bills on affected households, with the welfare of the people remaining the government's top priority.
